Radiation oncology is the medical specialty in which high-energy X-rays are used to gradually kill cancer cells so they are unable to grow, multiply, and spread. It is referred to by a number of different names: X-ray therapy, radiotherapy, or irradiation. Radiation therapy is a localized treatment meaning it only affects the cells in the area of the body actually being treated. With careful planning and state-of-the-art technology, every effort is made to preserve as many healthy cells as possible.

Newest Technologies, Treatments

Riverwest provides the latest treatment technologies including the newest generation linear accelerator featuring Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). IMRT is designed to more accurately target tumors while sparing healthy tissue. Treatment is available for all types of cancers.

The center also includes and has access to a comprehensive radiology department, offering a range of diagnostic imaging studies using a CT scanner. The scanner allows for CT simulations for planning radiation therapy treatments for our patients.

The most sophisticated digital imaging equipment and treatment planning systems are utilized at Riverwest. The use of advanced information management systems means the care staff has rapid access to patient histories and vital information thereby ensuring safety and high quality care.
